Half Hangit Maggie had a real connection with Oxford, one she could not have seen coming. It would be a lifesaver for her.
The story goes that she was still half alive as her body was removed from the Grassmarket gallows (hung under the Concealment of Pregnancy Act). The wooden cart that was to take her to a cemetery in Musselburgh had enough ventilation to support her life force.
Thankfully she was brought round to life but the question lies in the air how many people may have gone to the coffin in medieval times half alive ?
This event is consigned to history of the 18th Century and is a similar tale of Anne Green who was half hung in Oxford Castle in the 17th Century.
Both ladies survived the noose to lead fruitful lives and bore many legitimate children.
